TB Alert is the UK's national Tuberculosis charity.
The facts:
- 2 million men, women and children will die of TB this year - one every 15 seconds. Yet TB is a curable disease, the drugs are cost effective and available. These deaths could be avoided if people had the access they need to good TB treatment.
- TB is on the increase in the UK - it was never eradicated and never will be until it is controlled worldwide.
- TB is airborne and can affect anyone but it more commonly hits people with weak immune systems, for example those who are malnourished or HIV positive. TB is the biggest killer of people living with HIV.
- TB takes its highest toll on the poorest and most marginalised in society. At the same time it makes them poorer because they cannot work and subjects them to further stigma and discrimination
TB Alert is the only specialist TB charity working in the UK and internationally to fight Tuberculosis. Our goal is the control and ultimate eradication of TB by ensuring that everyone who needs it can access the life-saving cure they need.
We raise awareness of TB in the UK and overseas, we campaign for greater priority to be given to TB by governments and companies, and we support projects in the UK and in developing countries which ensure that more people can access good TB treatment. We focus on poor and marginalised communities, and high-risk groups such as people living with HIV. Increasingly our TB work is integrated with activities to fight HIV and other diseases of poverty.
TB Alert is a small charity, run mainly by volunteers, with volunteers and staff working from home. This means that more of our supporters money can go direct to where it counts - saving lives from TB. Every supporter who buys insurance through Givesure will make a real difference.
